Our Mission

The Breast Cancer Institute is a charitable fund set up to support education and knowledge sharing, the purchase of medical and scientific equipment, breast cancer research and to enhance and improve the patient environment and experience within the Edinburgh Breast Unit in addition to that already provided by NHS Lothian.

NHS Lothian Charity

The Breast Cancer Institute fund is held within NHS Lothian Charity (Scottish Registered Charity No: SC007342).

From the everyday to the transformational, NHS Lothian Charity supports NHS Lothian to excel for all the communities it serves: patients, families, carers and staff. Together, we help make healthcare better. We are dedicated to supporting NHS Lothian patients and staff, and improving health and wellbeing for the people of Edinburgh and the Lothians.

Fund Stewards

The BCI fund is managed by NHS Lothian Charity and locally, administration is managed by a dedicated team of appointed stewards with strong links to the Edinburgh Breast Unit:

  • Dr A Turnbull, breast cancer research group leader

  • Dr F Yuille, consultant breast clinical oncologist

  • Professor M Dixon, consultant breast surgeon

  • Mr O Young, consultant breast surgeon

  • Professor Peter Hall, consultant breast medical oncologist

The History of our Logo

Our original logo, as shown above (left), was designed around a purple flower which was painted and donated to us by the renowned Scottish painter Dame Elizabeth Blackadder. She also donated several works of original art which can be seen hanging in the waiting room at the Edinburgh Breast Unit. In 2023 our logo was updated (as shown above on the right) in line with the re-branding of our parent charity: NHS Lothian Charity - however, we retained our flower, the lasting symbol of the Breast Cancer Institute.
